the thirds recorded a memorable win over mottram today as two legends of the game showed the young guns how its done. for holding and richards, read butterworth and seville.
mr. t won the toss and chose to field ('we only know how to chase') and opened up with liam and lewis who both started well before tailing off at the end of their spells. liam picked up a wicket to finish with figures of 5.0.28.1 whilst lewis was 4.0.25.0.
detective mcnulty, the maverick glossop cop, who had taken time out from thwarting the dealings of west glossops drug lords, came on to bowl some tasty meat and potatos from the scout hut end and made hay in the dinting sun to rip apart the mottram top order, taking 5 wickets for 19 runs in six overs. the batsman were beguiled by the flight and a couple were so flummoxed they forgot where their stumps were entirely as they swayed away only to be bowled behind their legs.
two of his other wickets came from the old one-two as butterworth dished up two steak and ales which were edged to a more than accepting seville at slip: for warne and taylor, read butterworth and seville.
tom wyche (5.0.1.16) backed butty up well from the other end and got his wicket as james held a stinger at cover before he was replaced by alex clayton (4.0.1.18) who had someone bowled before ben squires (1.0.1.9) wrapped up the innings with a well directed yorker. special mention to tony who did an admirable job behind the stumps.
that left mottram with a below par score of 122 from only 25 of their 40 overs and with an in form seville set to open the batting, it didnt look nearly enough.
sev opened with lewis and both struggled against two good opening bowlers who extracted some bounce from the pitch, with the tall one bowling lewis for 3.
james joined seville at the crease and the prince started to find his range, finding the boundary on a regular basis. james played a couple of shots but was largely denied any opportunity to build an innings as the prince exercised what he felt was his divine right to lord it over the strike. the pinnacle came as james edged one to third man off the final ball of the over: 'im not running for that' was the call.
eddie then survived a scare as he edged one straight to gully only for it to go through the 6'8" lads hands.
some more pummels to the boundary soon saw the prince move to (another) third team 50, at which point he said adieu and sought the solace of a magners knowing his work was done.
moving out of the long shadow of the prince, james then found some rhythm before he was bowled by a quicker dart the ball after a straight six for 35.
at this point only 15 were needed for victory and liam wooleson (10 then bowled) saw them up to the threshold of victory before a straight six from tom wyche proved more effective than his attempt at a dilshan, to seal a fine victory.
praise to butterworth and seville for showing there is life in the old dogs yet and to mr t. for some fine management, with no french team style bust ups to be seen.
finally, thank you to lynn and jackie for providing us with some lovely scran (thats geordie for food) and to lindsay for some extremely neat scoring.
good performance, lovely day, fine win. done.
(butty and eddie i expect a pint for this)

You should have changed Seville & James for Boycott and Botham and ran him out!
It was funny how every time he sliced the ball over gully for 4 he mumbled “The batting averages are mine!”

brians pitiful comments will be ignored after what was a splendidly accurate report. Butty's high class bowling was a joy to behold whilst Seville, with the carribean sun toasting his scalp brought back memories of a beach in trinidad circa 1964 when he put the local young bowlers (holding, marshall and roberts) to the sword.

Pick of the young bowlers - Tom Wyche...an entertaining display of keeping by Toby and a fine tea being the other highlights.

As for James jnr it was clear he was struggling at the crease but was well protected by Seville who managed to coax him through a scratchy innings....a little thanks wouldn't go amiss young Tom!
